Fencing October & November Update

First and foremost, we would like to recognize Lord Sunshine for his elevation to Order of the Silver Rapier and Sir Tanaka who received the Award of Benzaiten at this last 100 Minutes War. We also formally recognize Serilda die Stollen as the cadet of Ellynor Redpath, which was announced on the fencing fields of this past 100 Minutes War. We also thank Ramic of the Rusted Woodlands for his service MiTing the entirety of this 100 Minutes War.

Practice Updates:

Our new home at Christ Lutheran Church in Woodcliff Lake has been welcoming and offered a wonderful relaxed space for us to do what we love to do. We have been able to run newcomer/youth drills and free sparring simultaneously, as well as melee practices during adult swim. We have had several new youth and adult fencers come to our practice and maintain a respectable attendance.

We have been making it a point to run melee scenarios at the end of every practice with a focus on spear drills and maintaining lines, tactics, and leadership. This is something that we are bringing our new novice fencers into as well. This has been invaluable and has set RW fencing apart from all other regional practices.

100 Minutes War Fencing Update:

Fencing took place in the woods again this year and everyone enjoyed 4 woods battles over the course of the afternoon. Teams were decided by a snowball tournament prior to the woods battles and our fencers were split amongst the two teams. The observations made and shared were all positive, noting that our fencers held lines well, created openings and defended fiercely. Spears were allowed during the last two battles, and out of the 7 total spears on the field, 4 of those were RW fencers.

Our success on the battlefield was a testament to the work we’ve all put in and our willingness to do what others do not. With that, we will continue to run melee drills at the end of each practice to help ensure each fencer that frequents our home has the skills to be a unit commander in melee.

—Other Notes—

A question was addressed to the Kingdom Marshal of Fence at 100 Minutes War: “Does the electrical tape ban only impact steel weapons or does it extend to spears as well?” The response was it is a blanket ban on all electrical tape in the rapier category, including spears. Cloth tape and duct tape is recommended.

We will continue to run our 1st and 3rd Monday fencing practices at our Woodcliff Lake location from 7-10pm, and as always, we welcome and cherish our constituants from Ostgardr and Settmour Swamp who call our practice their home.

Yours in Service,

Lord Percival Michaelson

RW Knight Marshal of Fence
